Our Policy Recommendations to Increase Opportunity
and Decrease Poverty in America
Opportunity Youth United has developed a platform for change, called Recommendations to Increase Opportunity and Decrease Poverty in America. This platform puts equal emphasis on investing in pathways out of poverty for young adults like ourselves seeking another chance, and on changing the conditions of poverty in our nation’s communities.
We offer practical yet transformative improvements to federal and state policy that will improve the systems that shape our lives and communities—ranging from family supports, early childhood, education, juvenile and criminal justice and foster care systems to national service, mentoring and job training. Working with national experts and policymakers, we have identified near- and longer-term priorities to increase opportunity and decrease poverty in America.
Our six near-term priorities to create pathways out of poverty for at least one million young people each year who are eager to seize opportunity:
Our commitment is to bring together people of all backgrounds to create a society in which all people are respected and protected equally, truly equal, where there is liberty and freedom, opportunity and responsibility, justice and love, for all. For this reason, everything we do is rooted in our guiding principles, described below.
Broader Systems Change for a Better Nation
In addition to our six near-term priorities, we recognize that big changes in various systems are needed to transform our communities and our nation. We need to create safe, welcoming and opportunity-rich communities for every child in America. Here, we outline our initial thoughts in four key areas of social change, click to explore them. This is an ongoing process of developing ever-wiser and more comprehensive solutions. We want to hear your thoughts. Contact us.
